Eric Henry Liddell was a Scottish athlete, rugby union international player, and missionary. He is perhaps most well known as the subject of the Oscar-winning 1981 film Chariots of Fire, which depicted his experiences training and racing in the Olympics and the religious convictions that influenced him. In his book about spiritual disciplines, he outlines his own pattern for living which has as its foundation a daily Bible reading plan.

The Disciplines of the Christian Life edition by Eric Liddell Religion Spirituality eBooks

Wow! What a gem of a book. We bought three copies. It's all about discipleship. Our family is walking through it together. It outlines Scripture readings for the entire year (not to read through the entire Bible, but to cover important topics for Christian growth/discipleship). Our girls 9, 8, and 6 are able to complete the readings easily because they are not whole chapters, just select passages. I'm personally challenged by the first couple sections (before it goes through each month), especially the ones on obedience and surrender. It's a great book. I'm so thankful to have a printed copy.

The Disciplines of the Christian Life edition by Eric Liddell Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

This is the only publication you can secure as the 2 others are confined to the estate of the buyer, and are therefore out of the public domain.Known by most for his gift to run, this book will likely be a pleasant surprise to the grace granted to this man who lived the life.
And, died an unanticipated tragic death in 1945 near the tail end of WW-2.
Liddell really gets down to the essential nuts and bolts of achieving and maintaining a close relationship with God.
His "no nonsense" approach would turn some off a bit, but if you've studied any material about his own life, you know
he speaks from gritty reality and truly defined what it meant to give one's self away in service to the greater good.
Many great references to illustrate his main points. He challenges people to be part of that "greater good".
Clear and accessible, this is a great 'orienteering' through the Bible by someone who was born & raised on mission with his parents. A practical guide in key principles and values from within the Word, that any interested investigator will enjoy delving into. It is useful as a bedside reading companion. More so as a tool to deepen one's relationship to Christ.
His loving and dedicated widow assembled post-mortem the writings of 'Scotland's greatest wing' - a rugby football reference that comes from the film Chariots of Fire, an award-winning film that covers the English contingent to the 1924 Olympics. This book doesn't trade in that part of Mr. Liddell's life. Rather he writes effectively from his own background, and presumably, his own walk.
In our small group study, it's been a wonderful resource for our discussions. For us, the book reaches and speaks to men of many differing quailties - age and circumstance. Its survey approcah is quite personal, rather than academic - a doorway through different scriptures referenced, with certain aspects highlighted in a way that invites consideration.
Kudos and appreciation for its compilation and presentation, both contemporary and timeless.
This book is basically for brand new Christians. I believe it was originally written in Mandarin and intended for Chinese converts. I bought it without knowing that clearly, so for me it was a waste of money.
When a friend gave me this book as a gift, I was surprised. I had no idea that Eric Liddell had left such a legacy. Written while spending his last days in a Japanese prison camp during World War II, his insights come from having "walked the walk" of the cross. That fact only adds to the depth of pathos I experience reading what he wrote. It is a gift I cherish and recommend.
Thanks to the movie "Chariots of Fire," Eric Liddell has become known around the world. This Olympic champion sprinter went on to a career as a missionary to China. He became a martyr when he continued to serve in China during World War II. In this book--The Disciplines of the Christian Life--Liddell reveals the essence of his vibrant Christian faith. Every Christian will be blessed by reading this book, and many seekers may be found by Christ through this powerful testament of faith.
This book is both a daily devotional as well as a view into Eric Liddell's life. It highlights what he felt to be needed to daily live out Christianity. It was written in Chinese in China around 1940 when teacher missionaries were unable to teach or have any contact with Chinese Christians, strictly enforced by the Japanese who had overtaken the northern part of China. Later, it was translated and published in English. It's a book I treasure and use daily. I can hear Liddell's voice through the pages, a man who refused to run on the Sabbath at the 1924 Paris Olympics as great sacrifice, yet won the 400 yard race in record breaking time, then left the limelight of fame to return to China as a teacher-missionary,minister, lived out the Sermon on the Mount while he and 1800 other foreigners were interred in a prison camp for 3 years, dying from a brain tumor five months before the end of WW II.
